Remembering to take time to rejuvenate while running a small creative business..

This past April, I took part in an enameling workshop in Certaldo, Italy which was an unforgettable experience. The combination of learning and exploring enamel techniques and immersing myself in a charming Italian town created a unique and inspiring atmosphere. The workshop was led by Jennifer Wells, a contemporary jewelry artist whose expertise and warmth made the whole experience even more special.

Discovering Certaldo’s Artistic Charm

Certaldo is a small town in Tuscany known for its medieval architecture and welcoming community. Its intimate streets and friendly atmosphere set the perfect stage for a creative workshop. The studio where the workshop took place was cozy and inviting. It reflected Jennifer’s personality—calm, focused, and creative. Being in such a setting helped me relax and focus on learning, away from the distractions of everyday life.

Jennifer is not only a skilled artist but also a patient and encouraging instructor. Her knowledge of enameling techniques and contemporary jewelry design was impressive.

Despite feeling a bit intimidated at first by both her and the other participants’ skills, Jennifer’s friendly approach made me fell included from the start. The other participants were also creative and experienced jewelers, but everyone was so friendly and open which helped create a positive and collaborative environment.

I was the least experienced jeweler at the workshop, but I did learn a lot while I was there. I actually didn't make any jewelry, but I did experiment with new techniques and materials while I was there. I think the most important lesson I learned was that I need to set some time aside regularly to just experiment and not worry about production. I have thought this before but never put it into practice.

Once the workshop was over, I also took some time to travel to Cinque Terre and Florence to play tourist. I haven't travel abroad on my own for several years. I was nervous but soon found out I had nothing to be nervous about! Getting around Italy by train was easy and straight-forward. Every place I visited was beautiful and full of friendly tourists and locals alike! Plus the towns and sights I visited were inspiring and full of charm and history!

The whole Italian experience boosted my confidence in myself and my jewelry. It also reminded me how valuable it is to step out of routine and immerse oneself in a new culture and craft.

Final Thoughts ...

Taking an enameling workshop in Certaldo was more than just learning new skills. It was about connecting with a craft, a place, and a group of people who share a love for creativity. The knowledge and friendships gained during this time will continue to inspire my artistic journey. And the extra time to travel and appreciate all that Italy had to offer, helped me appreciate life and come back home refreshed and ready to tackle all the ups and downs associated with running my small creative business!
